Here is a Philips 45 RPM of Daniel Barenboim playing J.C. Bach's sonata in Bb-major opus 17 nr 6. It's from his earliest recording session, 1954.

This is the "A" side. The "B" side, with the third movement of the J.C.Bach sonata can be found at:

I de-clicked and eq-ed the record myself.

  • This sound it seems to me too modern for '54. It seems a more recent incision. Forgive me, but I think this is not Barenboim in '54.

  • @TheEngraver Are you congratulating me with my transfer skills? :)

Nope, it's really 1954! Go to my channel home, and you will see some links to a blog I made for the Dutch PBS Radio 4. There are some contemporary LP's from the early 50's that even sound better... (Abbey Simon in the Grieg Pianoconcerto for instance..) Greetings from the Netherlands, Rolf

  • how can you be holding the LP in front of me if I'm listening to it right now.. what do you have like multiple copies?

  • @Politikonboard Recorded it first, then shot the video... My (old) setup can be seen in the Erich Rohn video I made.

    Greetings, Rolf

  • Because of the comments; do you just want a picture or a recordplayer as a video?

You can contact me on Twitter --> @otterhouse

  • A PICTURE IS NOT BETTER?

  • It it? If other people want to comment about that too...

    Greetings,

    Rolf

  • Forget the picture and just listen! This is embryonic Barenboim. Forget also that he is only 12 - this playing is typical of the mature artist: a complete understanding of the music, handled masterfully even at this tender age.

  • It's amazing how this guy was able to make such a mature interpretation since he was a child. Very nice performance.

Your blog is very interesting too, unfourtunately I cannot read Dutch to enjoy it even more. You're lucky to live between such a rich (high level) musical enviroment as Netherland's one.

Do you make some radio program presenting this historical recordings?

    Greetings.

  • You waving the LP cover around in front of the camera is hilarious for some reason...

  • @TheEngraver ah, that...alright then ;))))

  • @gitaclick no no, the sound quality seems to me too modern for '54. :-)

  • @TheEngraver Too modern for '54 or for Bach?! Mr.Barenboim was always ahead of his time...he still surprises even at this 'second' tender age...

  • I have loved Daniel Barenboim's way on the piano, all my life. So sad about the way his marriage finished with the death of Jaqueline Du Pres, ...but what a match that was! Daphne

  • Pergolesi wrote piano music who knew? The recording amazes me that teachers in that era chose this material . J.C.Bach usually sounds like Mozart but not here. This is fastidious playing. The slow movement shows a mature and very learned artist.

  • Thanks for sharing- doubters, critics- why can't people just enjoy?
