Actually i'd go as far to say that it's mostly intuitive.
and if ya want to push it even further, i'd say that we possibly even subconciously pick up on possibilities (ie the possibility of crashing), and can act on things that don't actually ever happen.
Had this thought myself. Given people states of awarness when driving there should definatly be more accidents. I think a big part of it is the brain acting on information that it hasn't conciously registered... ie looking up when it takes in a glipse of the colour red (stop sign), or even more intuitive senses coming into play. I garuntee that if you keep multitasking, you will get a warning (near miss, swurve etc.)... you'd be smart to pay more attention after that happens ;)
