regina spektor - Chelsea Hotel #2 (Leonard Cohen Cover)

Lyrics:

I remember you well in the chelsea hotel
You were talking so brave and so sweet
Giving me head on the unmade bed
While the limousines wait in the street
Those were the reasons and that was New York
We were running for the money and the flesh
And that was called love for the workers in song
Probably still is for those of them left

But you got away, didn't you babe?
You just turned your back on the crowd
You got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you...
I need you, I don't need you...
And all of that jiving around

I remember you well in the chelsea hotel
You were famous, your heart was a legend
You told me again you preferred handsome men
But for me you would make an exception
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
Who are oppressed by the figures of beauty
You fixed yourself up, you said, well never mind
We are ugly but we have the music

Then you got away, didn't you babe?
You just turned your back on the crowd
You got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you...
I need you, I don't need you...
And all of that jiving around

I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best
I can't keep track of each fallen robin
I remember you well in the chelsea hotel
But that's all, I don't even think of you that often

  • Check this beautiful version by Marisa Nadler:

  • Beautiful voice. Beautiful cleavage.

  • A good version, but other commenters are correct in saying there is just a bit too much cute in this version. Leonard's version is full of regret and ache. Regina is simply recounting a story someone related to her with a bit of embellishment.

Such simple songs require personal experience to add depth. She just doesn't have that experience, but she made a good effort.

  • @jensk94

    Agreed

  • I heard this, fell in love, had to hear the original, and it was a million times better, considering how good this is, imagine that

  • paul baribeau covered this, and it's better than the original

  • @SkipSparkypants Some songs shouldn't be covered anyway. This is one of them.

  • She does a good job although it is just impossible to give it that touch Cohen gave it. She has an amazing voice but this is just Cohens song.

  • i think i love this song now....i like regina specktors version....but i bet it could have been better...both are heartbreaking at parts and i love them

  • I love Regina Spektor, but this version lacks the transcendent quality of Cohen's original. It's pretty but it's slight.
