Decades of Disparity: New Study Underscores Severity of Racial Bias in Drug-Related Law Enforcement

A new study underscores the severity of racial bias in drug-related law enforcement. According to Human Rights Watch, African Americans were arrested as much as five-and-a-half times as whites on drug charges every year for the past three decades. The trend dates back to 1980, the earliest date with complete data. [includes rush transcript]

  • this is the biggest difference between canada and US, our criminal laws in general a lenient and marijuana is not really as much a big deal, we've legalized the growing of industrial hemp, unlike USA. It is my strong wish that the US will decriminalize marijuana, because weed is harmless and coming down on it is such bullshit. LEGALIZE IT NOW

  • If the words 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' don't include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn't worth the hemp it was written on. - Terence McKenna

"Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded" -Abraham Lincoln

  • The percentage of working class whites is not 6 times that of blacks and Latinos. You are counting middle class and upper class whites. They do not go to prison for drugs, but the working poor do.

If you just used statistics showing the percentage of working class whites then you would get a very different picture.

    End the War on Drugs!

  • plenty of poor whites on drugs if it was class there would be more whites represented in prison being that whites are six times the population of blacks. majority of offenders in prison are black and latino of the drug offenses mostly black and latino how is your assertion true .

  • Watch 3.01..."blacks and whites engage in drug offences at about the same rate"... watch her face...ROFLOL... what planet was that based on ??? LOL

  • Race in America is a big problem from the bottom to the top.

  • Perhaps these ostensible disparities need to be remedied by ensuring the arrest of a larger proportion of the pool of white offenders, rather than watering down existing statutory and enforcement machinery....

  • Huge profits are generated from drugs because they are illegal. This is probably the truest statement in this video.

  • Rockeller name is well know for controlling the population with laws and money.

  • You are right it is class warfare but you cannot discuss class w/o race and you cannot discuss race w/o class. Underclass whites do get forgotten though.

  • The data should break it down by class. It is the working class and poor who are being imprisoned by the war on drugs. Over 30 million Americans have been imprisoned by the US government since marjuiana was outlawed in the 1930's. Working class white neighborhoods are being raided and imprisoned by the millions in this country. It is a war on the poor many more whites are being imprisoned than blacks. You make it sound like that is not true. The drugs war is class warfare!
