Another Spanish tenor. Antonio Cortis (1891-1952) singing two arias from Puccini's Turandot: Nessun Dorma and Non Piangere, Liu. Recorded for HMV in 1927? Great technique. A powerful beautiful voice, even throughout the range and passionate, but no sobs. Spent the 1920's in Chicago but returned to Spain after the Crash where his career lingered under Franco.

  • Cortis had a lush timbre, but this music needs a little more romantic wonderment.

Merrihew will probably ban me when I admit that my favourite versions of these solos are Aureliano Pertile's HMV versions! Eek! Ouch!

  • You know I don't feel that way about any singer (well almost any). I don't have but a few Pertile 78's and a single LP reissue which don't include these selections. He had noticable technical faults but was passionate and exciting without overdoing it like many Italian singers. My major criticism is his quiver like vibrato which pitches sharp (on low notes and soft passages).

  • I once had a friend named Aureliano who was one of the strangest people I've ever known.

  • C. 1930, Pertile recorded Carmen, complete, in Italian, with the Spanish mezzo Aurora Buades as Carmen. You might revise your opinion about Pertile "not overdoing it" when you hear the finale from that recording!

At his best, though, as in these arias, or those from Adriana Lecouvreur, or in duets with Margherita Sheridan, he was an intensely expressive singer.

  • I once owned the Carmen set (38 sides!) but gave it away a long time ago. I confess that I never played it - too much work getting up 38 times to change a record.

  • HERMOSO, PERFECTO, GRANDE ANTONIO CORTIS.

  • @pieritlyon parole sante amico,parole giuste!

  • Awesome!

  • + 10 !!!!! IMMENSO !!! IMMORTALE !!!!

  • AulicExclusiva- Here' s hoping. that Merrihew does have some.

BTW-Did you enjoy the video that I sent youv

  • Perhaps Merrihew has some Weingartner Strauss. It's Delicious.

EMI Japan reissued the complete Weingartner recordings on CD, including all his Strauss.
