This song was used in the film, 'Garden State'. (movie FAQS below) I used clips from a live performance of this song as well as clips from the film, synced to the studio audio track to create this video.
Paul says, in 1969 Art went down to Mexico to film Catch 22 and it was then that he wrote this song. If Paul Simon ever hinted at a breakup with Art Garfunkel before, this song all but proves it with the line, "Tom get your plane right on time. I know that your eager to fly now." Before the Folk duo became famous, they were known as Tom and Jerry. Tom was Art's stage name, so this line symbolizes their increasing need for musical and personal freedom. Garfunkel (Tom) was trying to kick off an acting career and was missing a lot of recording dates with Simon in order to film movies such as Carnal Knowledge and Catch 22.
Garden State is a film written, directed by, and starring, Zach Braff, with Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard and co-starring Sir Ian Holm. The film centers on Andrew Largeman (Braff), a 26-year-old actor/waiter who returns to his hometown in New Jersey after his mother dies. The title alludes both to the nickname for New Jersey, and to lines from Andrew Marvell's poem "The Garden" ("Such was that happy garden-state,/ While man there walked without a mate").
Lyrics:
Tom, get your plane right on time. I know your part'll go fine. Fly down to mexico. Da-n-da-da-n-da-n-da-da and here I am, The only living boy in new york.
Oh I get the news I need on the weather report. Oh I can gather all the news I need on the weather report. Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile. Da-n-da-da-n-da-da-n-da-da and here I am The only living boy in new york
Half of the time we're gone but we dont know where, And we dont know where.
Half of the time we're gone but we dont know where, And we dont know where...
Tom, get your plane right on time. I know that you're eager to fly now. Hey let your honesty shine, shine, shine now Da-n-da-da-n-da-da-n-da-da Like it shines on me The only living boy in new york, The only living boy in new york.
