12/15/2009 - An EJ&E kind of morning!

T'was an EJ&E kind of morning!

I woke up and flipped on the scanner, hoping something would be going on, on the old EJ&E. Not five minutes after, I heard EJ&E 663 heading south, already clear of the River Line, meaning I didn't have much time. It was the L519 (AXS1). I flew out the door and made my way to the tracks. As I parked at the bottom of the hill, the gates began to go down and I ran up that hill as fast as I could. I've never ran so fast in my life. I got to the tracks, set the tripod up as a mini and snagged a video. 663, with its newly installed P5, rolls south through Crest Hill, IL. Fortunately, I was also able to get a picture as well. Mission accomplished!

Scanner chatter then revealed that the train had to hold, short of the bridge, to allow a barge on the Des Plaines River to pass. I headed towards the east side of Joliet and made it to the tracks. The train was on the approach to CN's East Joliet Yard, as I arrived. When you hear a P5, you certainly don't think "EJ&E." A CN truck was sitting close by, idling away.

With nothing else going on, I headed home. CN apparently wasn't going to let me stay home for long. I was home for ten minutes, when I heard the 663 heading back out north, with the L509 (JSW1). By this time, it was about noon and the JSW1 is usually out of Joliet by 7:45 in the morning. I headed back out to the tracks, near I-55. Here, the 663 has the throttle opened up, as it highballs towards the River Line, in Plainfield, not far ahead.

At Renwick Road, in Plainfield, we see the 663 beginning its trip to Morris, down the River Line. Made it just in time, too.

Now, in Shorewood, the 663 rolls along, not too far from Minooka.

Nice video. Do you know what locomotive model EJ&E 4548 is? I couldn't find it on any roster, but it was on an intermodal today from Chicago to Indiana.
