MaximsNewsNetwork: 17 February 2010 - UNMIS: Sudan - Election campaigns, the first in 24 years - kicked off in Sudan this past weekend, with SPLM presidential candidate Yasir Arman and the incumbent Sudan's President Omar Al Bashir drawing large numbers of peaceful party supporters.

The two different-styled campaigns drew large numbers of peaceful party supporters who chanted various slogans in support of their presidential candidates.

Fireworks lit the night as Sudans President Omar Al Bashir, led his National Congress Party on Saturday (February 13th 2005) at a football stadium where he led crowds with song and dance.

The stadium which seats close to 40,000 was full of supporters many waving flags, posters and some draping flags.

All of us have to present ourselves to the people of Sudan,. I will do it. I will do it. I will do it. But if there is someone who has nothing for the people of Sudan and want to bring down NCP, we have no problem. If the people of Sudan want NCP to get down, we will get down. We will salute them, said President Bashir as he launched his bid for presidency.

On Sunday (February 14, 2010) the SPLM presidential candidate Yasir Arman, was welcomed with independence victory songs at the house of Sudans former freedom fighter Ali Abdel Latif, who led sudans fight against British rule in 1924.

This according to the Party is symbolic to what the Party is trying to achieve freedom and change.

Yasir Arman was nominated by SPLM in January 2010, as the Partys presidential candidate in the north, and is being considered as a main challenger to President Omar Bashir

The time has come for our nation to reconcile with all its elements, with its diversity, with its different colours and its different languages in a new project and a new work which will only come if the present situation changes, said Yasir Arman the SPLM presidential candidate, at the gathering which was also jammed with song and dance by Party supporters, many from SPLM and other parties that support the values of the party.

85 political parties have so far been registered by the Political Parties Affairs Council and the National Electoral Commission has approved 12 presidential candidates to contest in historic elections where polling, sorting, counting and announcement of results are scheduled to take place from April 11 to 18.

One of the bench-marks of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005 is an electoral process which will give the country and its citizens a chance for democratic transformation.
