The Walmart Foundation presented a check for $12,500 to the Southern Scholarship Foundation on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the Florida Retail Federation Scholarship House on the Florida A&M University campus.
Sen. Bill Montford and Mickey S. Moore, President/CEO of Southern Scholarship Foundation were on hand to accept the grants, totaling $12,500, from Walmart Foundation. One grant, in the amount of $10,000, provides support for SSF's rent-free scholarship housing program. The second grant, in the amount of $2,500 was used to purchase emergency/hurricane kits for each of SSF's 25 scholarship houses. Southern Scholarship Foundation (SSF) provides rent-free housing to eligible students who attend Florida State University, University of Florida, Florida A&M University, or Florida Gulf Coast University. SSF currently operates 25 scholarship houses for 412 students across the four campuses, providing students with rent-free housing during their four years of college.This saves each student and their family up to $10,000 a year in housing costs. The scholarship is awarded to students based on financial need, academic merit, and good character and is renewable each year. The Walmart Foundation strives to provide opportunities that improve the lives of individuals in their communities.
