That's the Nook booting from scratch. You hardly ever turn it off if your a daily reader. It goes into sleep mode and takes about 3 seconds to get into your book. NO ONE turns off ereaders this is normal for Kindle, Nook, Sony, etc. Tap not touch. Book loading time depends on the size of the book, so I can load a short one fast or a long one slow. Also dpeends on how it was package in the epub. This does look like a slow Nook. You can select a page BTW in newer vers and they are way faster now.

omg idont under stand some people the buy the nook thn complain thats its slow....their still fixing it up and makin it bettr jst relax if yu dont likk it send bck or sale it that easy

When you consider that it's running Android just like a phone, it's not that crazy. Plus the firmware nipped that problem in the ass.

nook has a dictionary function, right?

It has lookup function, which works in epub and pdb books from B&N or your own epub documents. Does not work in periodicals.
You can also highlight and leave notes.

From total off- Sony PRS-600 loads faster, Kindle slower, but both Kindle and Sony have sleep mode with screen off- they start up from that in moments.
Nook does not have option to turn off screen in sleep mode.
