Child poverty in Britain

Britain has one of the worst rates of child poverty in the industrialized world which is "shaming" this country. Around 3.6 million children, 28 per cent of the total, are living in poverty despite efforts by the Government to tackle the problem. It is appalling that in Britain in 2005 there are children whose parents cannot afford even the basic necessities others take for granted, such as a warm winter coat and three meals a day. We are seeing a new determination to tackle poverty but it is vital that we keep up the pressure on the Government to stick to its pledge to eradicate poverty by 2020. Poverty shames a relatively wealthy country like ours and we have a duty to stamp it out. It is shameful that poverty is still the greatest single threat to the well-being of children and families in the UK.

Changes from 1 April 2011 uk

From 1 April 2011 the rates for Local Housing Allowance will be reduced across the country:

Weekly excess

The maximum £15 weekly excess that some customers can get will be removed.

Limits on payments

A limit will be introduced so that Local Housing Allowance does not exceed:

£250 a week for a one bedroom property (including shared accommodation)

£290 a week for a two bedroom property

£340 a week for a three bedroom property

£400 a week for a four bedroom property

@geisterbahn1. I agree on every1 being taxed at some level. Example £100,000 a year earner paying 40% tax, lot of tax (£40,000), £12,000 a year earner pays 20% tax thats £2400 tax. Now why should the high earner pay double the % in tax. Couldnt the high earner just pay 20% would still be £20,000. Well no they cant as they have to pay for lazy welfare mum & dad with a litter of kids who get everything for free, dont you agree?

Lots of poverty in families is created by very poor parenting skills where parents look after their own needs 1st ie fags, booze, drugs, crap food, big tvs & lots of other rubbish that is not essential.Familes with kids are very well provided for by the state & so are their parents. Know lots of familes with lots of kids, dad with bad back (yeh right) sick money, rent paid, health stuff paid, school lunch paid, the bloody list is endless!

Abolish the Class system, stop taxing poverty ! anyone earning under 12.000 pays no tax. abolish the Monarchy,and redistribute the wealth they have stolen from the people among the poor. England is a shameful place to live nd many now who are sick dont get benefits due to the evil ESA change to sickness benefit, One lady known to myself has her benefit stopped on the (descripters) and the evil concentrationcamp staff of ATOS shes on the brink of losing her flat and dog and starvation is real

Child poverty in the UK my arse. The parents put them there spending the cash on booze, fags drugs & chips but the taxpayer picks up the tab for their school lunches.Look at the figues £, tax credits child allowance,free school lunches/trips, & the income their parents get for staying at home on welfare handouts. Judge the poverty by how many games consoles they own & the size of their parenst widescreen tv. COBBLERS!

Im English and its a shameful country to live in ! disgusts me ! get rid of council tax .put energy in the governments power to price it . and ban water rates! re introduce council housing at max 40 quid a week ,and hang margret thatcher
