5 Stages of an Abusive Relationship

Denial
At this stage a young woman is going through Denial. She feels lonely, isolated and is not ready to accept that she is being abused. She is still trying to 'fix' the situation and is not sure what is happening to her. Also she is slowly being manipulated and suffering under his control and jealousy.

Acceptance
At this stage a young woman accepts that she is going through domestic abuse. At this time she will be looking to protect herself. She will still be hoping that he will change and that she can help him to change.

Realisation
The girl begins to realise that nothing she can say or do will make him change and that he is not going to stop. She will start to seek help to see if someone else can make him stop.

Flight
The victim learns that no one can make him stop. She sees her only option as leaving the relationship to stop him directly abusing her. Getting her out is not the end of the story!

Recovery
It is important to remember that leaving a relationship is the very beginning of the recovery period. It is not as simple as now he is gone she feels fine. All young women at this stage will have a complex mix of emotions and without support they may even find themselves going back!

The girls recognise their lives can not be based around response to the perpetrator's behaviour any more. They have to break away as much emotionally as physically and begin the process of rebuilding a life for themselves that is not based on fear.

It is vitally important that we recognise young women at this stage (Recovery) and that someone has responsibility for supporting them. Without allowing for this stage young women will never be able to move forward to a new life without carrying all of the baggage and they may even go back.

This is something all young women should watch. Young men too. Nobody deserves to be abused. Verbal abuse leads to physical abuse. Life is too short to be with an angry piece of human garbage. Good job ladies !
