Burundi Drummers - ATTENTION!

- The issue at hand is NOT paying for films.
This info basically leads to the conclusion that smaller YT channels will be undesirable.
-The present policy favours big companies and there is a clear intention to turn YT into another MSM-like paying site.
-The site is losing its main charm: user-generated, sometimes unique content.
-The star rating system a lot of people miss most probably will not be back because it is much easier to manipulate viewcounts and thus funnel viewers towards YT favourites.
- It is not sensible even from a strictly financial point of view. This might lead to YT losing money. People come here out of curiosity. If they find the same s...t here as on any commercial TV channel, they will eventually leave the site.
- My question is: CUI BONO?

Move would put it in more direct competition with Apple

Google's YouTube video service is in talks with Hollywood studios to launch a streaming pay-per-view movie service by year's end.

The Financial Times reported that the service is expected to launch in the U.S. and then get rolled out globally. The move would put YouTube into more direct competition with Apple and others, such as Hulu and Netflix, as players try to become the preferred destination for distribution of content in the digital age.

Hollywood seems intrigued by the idea of YouTube's big reach, according to the FT report.
It said newer film titles would cost about $5 on the planned on-demand streaming service.

The news of the planned YouTube film service launch comes after Google top executives wooed studios and guilds during a chat with reporters on the sidelines of Herb Allen's annual Sun Valley media mogul gathering in July."

Google's YouTube video site is in negotiations with Hollywood's leading movie studios to launch a global pay-per-view video service by the end of 2010, putting it head-to-head with Apple in the race to dominate the digital distribution of film and television content.

Google has been pitching to the studios on the international appeal of a streaming, on-demand movie service pegged to the world's most popular search engine and YouTube, according to several people with knowledge of the situation.

AOL and Google expand advertising deal

By Kenneth Li in New York

Last updated: September 2 2010 20:07

AOL on Thursday renewed a deal with Google on internet search advertising, expanding it to include searching on mobile devices and on the YouTube online video service.

Financial terms of the deal, which expands a near decade-long partnership between the two media groups, were not furnished. Google and AOL will share a percentage of revenue generated by search advertising across AOL's range of websites.

The new deal, which includes AOL contributing video content to YouTube, expands upon a landmark partnership between the two companies that helped cement Google's leadership in internet search advertising. In 2005, Google announced the purchase of a 5 per cent stake in AOL for $1bn, beating rivals Yahoo and Microsoft. Google also extended a $300m credit agreement to AOL to use on Google's network at the time.

Google first started providing search advertising services to AOL in 2002.

The relationship has proved vital to AOL, which credits it with generating a "significant" portion of its own advertising revenue, according to regulatory filings. Companies bid for their ads to appear alongside search results containing relevant keywords. In the first six months of this year, AOL's ad revenue generated from the relationship was $209m, down from $274.9m in the same period in 2009. Last year, Google search ad revenue from the deal accounted for about a third of AOL's overall ad revenue.
