AMERICAN TEACHER is the feature-length documentary produced and directed by Academy Award--winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth; produced by Nínive Calegari, co-founder of the literacy non-profit 826 National, and best-selling author Dave Eggers; and narrated by Academy Award-winner Matt Damon.

AMERICAN TEACHER chronicles the stories of four teachers - Erik Benner, Jonathan Dearman, Jamie Fidler, and Rhena Jasey - who live and work in disparate urban and rural areas of the country. By following these teachers as they reach different milestones in their careers, the film tells the deeper story of the teaching profession in America today. The film shows us the experience of these four young teachers as they recognize the importance of what they do, and how much they love what they do, but ask: can I afford to continue to teach?

Big businesses mostly profit from the investment of education by getting well educated staff. They should pay an extra education tax to improve the situation. I can't believe people call teachers lazy when they have to go through College accept a crappy salary, correct kids work and prepare at home in their own time, work on weekends in extracurricular activities, put up with parents misinformed blame & have no choice but to deliver the Governments cut back crappy education curriculum.

    And finally,

Teaching is consistently ranked amongst the most stressful jobs one can do. The U.S. needs to offer its educators pay and respect commensurate to what their years of study provide comparable professions or the downward slide --

It's available on Netflix Instant. It's a GREAT movie, although it might make you question your decision to become a teacher. I'm working on my Master's in Teaching. I know I'm not going to get rich, but I also know that I was put on this planet to teach. So I'm choosing making the world a better place over owning a mansion and a yacht.

Stephen Fry taught for a bit and on his show QI, called teaching one of the most exhausting jobs he's ever had if not THE most exhausting. And honestly, it's true.

This movie is so full of shit it stinks....get rid of the damm teacher unions so you can fire the shitty teachers and pay the good teachers more......that makes too much sense for a liberal or democrat to figure out....get rid of teacher unions and we get rid of the problem.

Money? I had no trouble getting the book/pens/pencils/paper/chalkboard. What I couldn't build myself, I used to beg from Ebay sellers, and they (especially the working-class ones) usually sent me stuff for free.

But school sports? Speech therapy? Solid, consistent class schedules? Healthy school lunch? I can't build those things from cast-offs. Nor can I beg or steal them.

    2. Those who can teach

    3. Those who can teach gym

    4. Those who can do probably can't teach

    5. Those who can't teach will make laws that get in the way of the teachers doing their job!
