I played the part of "China Joe", perhaps the best loved immigrant of the Alaskan Gold Rush era. "China Joe" was Lee Hing. In this documentary, the Producer was Martin Guinness. It was written by James Balian and Michael Cove and narrated by David Soul. The Director and Director of Photography was Christopher Robin Collins

So, he was the only Chinese left in Alaska when the rest of the Chinese were expelled from there? I guess the only ones that look Chinese in Alaska by then would be the Inuits/Eskimos.

China Joe remained to become one of Juneau's leading citizens. He was said to be the only man in Alaska without an enemy.

Thanks for your sentiments. This is a re-enactment of a historic event.

It's a different time then. Baker and storekeeper, Lee Hing's, aka "China Joe", humanitarianism saved lots of miners from despair and starvation, asking nothing in return. In 1886, his benefactors protected him with their lives, when armed vigilantes in Juneau tried to seize him to send him out of town along with the other low paid Chinese laborers out of the Treadwell mine.

Thankfully, people are more tolerant today.

I can't belive it Allan, these produces have become insessively racist once more by the notion of 'China' joe, signifying that all Asians are Chinese. Why didn't they call the movie Lee Hing or something? I don't see any movies called 'european joe' so i would expect the courtesy to be extended to those from the east.
