This video shows the numerical simulation of the first five vibration modes of a "smart" beam. The modal analysis is performed in the ANSYS commercial finite element software. The first two and the fourth modes are transversal, meaning that the movement is out of plane. Note the locations, where the beam does not seem to move (modes 2,4) - these are the so called resonance nodes. The third node is moving sideways and the fifth mode has a twisting resonant shape. Resonance frequencies are located at 8.1, 50.1, 100.0, 139.1, 192.2, 274.4 and 448.1 Hz.
The aluminum cantilever is equipped with piezoelectric actuators. The two actuators closer to the fixed end are in an open circuit state, while the rest is close-circuited. The beam clamp is simulated by taking away all degrees of freedom (DOF) at the left side. The bottom layer of nodes in the actuators is set at a zero volt potential. The top layer of the inactive ones has a zero voltage in the upper layer as well. The top layer of the active actuators has its nodes coupled to the lowest index.
This video is made for the "Noise and Vibration: Emerging Methods" conference, see http://www.novem2012.unina.it for more information.
