A CALL TO CIVIL ENGINEERS: JOIN ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDER-USA
In this video originally aired on December 7, 2007 for the PBSs News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Spencer Michels report s on how Civil Engineers with the Non-profit Organization Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) are putting their engineering skills to work for the benefit of communities in developing parts of the world. The members of EWA-USA perform the design and help to construct water supply, sanitation, and energy supply projects in remote or marginalized communities around the world. An integral part of EWB-USAs mission is to help create a more stable and prosperous world by addressing people's basic human needs by providing necessities such as clean water, power sanitation and education. It is my hope that videos like this one will move many to join forces with their engineering colleagues and fellow students at EWB-USA.
The video relates the story of how one man, Dr. Bernard Amadei , a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado (Boulder) founded the organization; On the urging of landscapers working at his home, Dr. Amadei visited the small village of San Pablo, located in the Central American country of Belize, to help ease poverty in the small village. While at the village, Dr. Amadei noticed that several of the villages little girls were hauling buckets of water from the river to their homes rather than spending their time receiving a formal education. Moved with compassion, Dr. Amadei designed and help to build a pump and pipeline system to convey water to the village. As a result of that success, the EWB-USA organization was born.
Today, there are over 300 vibrant and dedicated chapters of EWB-USA, including university chapters on 180 campuses, to harness the spirit, knowledge, and energies of those who are interested in helping fulfill the mission.
