Proof that the sax is like the overgrown, over-muscular son of a more refined father.
(Yes, I realize the sax does not actually stem from the bassoon, but the timbres do have a fair bit of similarity.)
I also find it interesting that the bassoon manages to go a whole-tone lower than the baritone sax despite being much smaller.

Seriously wow!! I started the bassoon about 6 months ago and that was incredibly inspiring- a nice break from my traditional background of all classical. It really does have an amazing tone- that was awesome.

@VXDevistatorXV yup, most European languages use some variation on the word "fagott" to refer to a bassoon. The insulting slang you're thinking of is actually spelled "faggot." They both refer to the old definition meaning bundle of sticks though.
