Check out Focus Lighting, Inc.'s dynamic new addition to Manhattan's Westside!

NYCruise and the NYC Economic Development Corporation conceptualized vibrant portals to provide a visual landmark for Piers 88 and 90 and enhance the profile of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal; engaging visitors and attracting special events. They charged Bermello Ajamil & Partners and WSP Flack + Kurtz to enlist experts in the field of dynamic visual LED display lighting to help them achieve their vision.

Focus Lighting answered the call and collaborated with the owner and design team, including graphic designers Two Twelve, to design two dynamic entry portal signage displays for the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, creating a new landmark and visual identity for the piers.

Like a true New Yorker, these signs come alive at nightfall and put on a show till the wee hours of the morning. The evening starts with a kinetic depiction of the sunset over the Hudson River, transitioning to an iconic branded show for NY Cruise and the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

Every hour the signage morphs into a Lighthouse beacon, and on the half hour passersby are treated to an organic water inspired show. The signs can be user controlled to provide brand identity for Norwegian and Carnival Cruise Lines when their ships are in port. For holidays and special events, any combination of user selected colors can be displayed.

The signs use only energy efficient, long life LED sources from Philips Color Kinetics, with custom exterior rated power supplies by City Theatrical. The control system is a Light System Manager from Philips Color Kinetics, with an Interactive Technologies Cue Server to trigger daily playback.
