I have a fascination with accents so I thought I'd give this meme a go. When I was growing up in Central Missouri I didn't think I had any sort of accent because everybody around me had a much much stronger accent, but leaving the region has made me realize that some accent did bleed through, especially when I say certain words. It's much much worse when I am tired or inebriated.
Here's the meme if you want to do it yourself:
Say These Words: Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting Image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught
Now answer these questions:
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?
No matter what any of our accents sound like...it's all good!

@MrArdata That far south? Central Missouri and southwest Missouri are not exactly that far south compared to Iowa. Anyway...Iowa is located in what is known as the North Midland accent's domain. That is as close to General American in the central and Eastern United States as you'll get. South of the latitude of Iowa, Illinois, indiana, and Ohio all exhibit the South Midland accent, the same one as Missouri. It's not a southern accent. It's general American w/ a few Southern tendencies.

When the rain falls and the sun is shining it is referred to as Monkey's Birthday. That’s what my Granma always calls it.

I live in central Missouri (Jefferson City/Colombia region). You seem to have a fairly pure un-Southern accent much like I do. :)

You don't sound like you have an accent for someone living that far south. I am from eastern Iowa and have lived here since I was three years old but was born in north central Missouri. As I was growing up we used to visit relatives in Missouri and back then I could detect a strong rural accent with everybody there. After a long while, I went back to visit in March of 2011 and only the oldest generation had retained their unique accent. Everybody else sounded like you or anybody from Iowa.

Interesting. "Tennis shoes" in Baltimore and Seattle. "Sneakers" in New England and Missouri. We have a unique diffusion of words in this country. And "sody-pop," haven't heard that one yet. Great video, thanks.

You seem to have a more urban accent. You sound very non-hillbilly compared to Crawford county, where I am from. There are people that I know who talk like you, and most of the time they are faking it so they will fit into mainstream society. I don't try to hide my accent, but mine isn't as thick as others. There are actually still people around here who roll their r's and sound Irish.
