The "crazy looking thing to the right of it" is a cooling tower. Water flows from tank at top down chains to lower tank. The "rain chains" help keep the water streams from blowing away during windy days. I have seen other "demonstation engines" that used a simple water shower head.

It's funny how things can be mixed up.
Small facts:
The two danes formed their first company Tuxen and Hammerich in the year 1875.
Later they formed a new name for the company, which consisted of the first three letters of each of their names.
It seems that the origin of their two names could be lead back to Germany. So anglosaxians not exactly, but saxians maybe, we don't know.
