What is meditation?
One could say that it is the natural ebb and flow between manifestation and the inward eternal Self, the seat of all wisdom. We experience, we return within to be nourished (see Tao 20).

EXPERIENCE - YANG
"I passed by the field of the sluggard, and by the vineyard of the man lacking sense, and behold, it was completely overgrown with thistles, its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.

REFLECTION - YIN
When I saw, I reflected upon it. I looked, and received instruction.

INSTRUCTION
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, then your poverty will come as a robber and your want like an armed man" Proverbs 24:30-34.

EXPERIENCE - YANG
"The more laws and restrictions there are, the poorer people become.
The sharper men's weapons, the more trouble in the land.
The more ingenious and clever men are, the more strange things happen.
The more rules and regulations, the more thieves and robbers.

REFLECTION - YIN
I take no action, and people are reformed.
I enjoy peace, and people become honest.
I do nothing, and people become rich.
I have no desires, and people return to the good and simple life.

INSTRUCTION
Rule a nation with justice.
Use what is strange to resolve matters.
Succeed in the world without doing" Tao Te Ching 57.

  • Thanks so much, Mike! There are so many references to meditation in the Bible! I am reminded of Psalm 46:10, Be still and know (experience) I am. 'Be still' is literally, 'slack off'- fitting the idea of observing rather than doing. Namaste, Friend!

Hey Jonathan! Yes, the verse you allude to is an excellent example of meditation! Thank you for sharing it. Namaste, my Friend.

You are correct. Words are limiting. They are merely symbols, pointing to a truth. Once you know the truth, you no longer need the symbols. Until you know the truth, the symbols will not be fully understood. Thus, the seeker must look within (his or her own life experience). When there is understanding, the symbols used by Jesus will be as clear as those used by the Buddha, and so forth.

Tao is hidden, obscure, and is referred to as the Mother : these are YIN attributes.

  • @Tao33316 Yet still, in my humble opinion, I'd say that the danger with words is that the Mind will form concepts with these words, which are limiting. But, as Chuang Tzu said, once we've trapped the fish, we no longer need the net. So these words can be a good start.

By the way, I found it curious you said emptiness was Yin, which would mean that the Tao (which was before Yin and Yang) transcends emptiness. While mostly people see the Tao as equivalent to emptiness. I don't meanit criticaly

  • Nice Mike...Thank You

    Big Love

  • i love your words

Yes. The words we choose are not so important as the consciousness they evoke.
