A short film by Sean Hogben from Thistime Productions about Hawkesbury One.
Hawkesbury One is a group of fourteen citizen art collectors. In the first ten years of the twenty-first century, we collected works by contemporary Australian artists.
Our aim? To look through the eyes of the artist, at the ideas of concern and interest to Australians at the turn of the millennium.
Often we struggled to reach agreement, but in the end we made our calls and purchased over thirty pieces of art -- video art, paintings, sculpture and installations. As it turns out, our collection includes works by artists now considered among Australia's best.
The artworks were shared by us all and rotated around our houses. We met regularly at each other's houses and in restaurants.
We see ourselves as a group influencing the way people collect art. Once you had to visit galleries to see good art, or be a patron collector. Now there is another way. O
ur show, Citizen Collectors at the Newcastle Art Gallery tells our story.
