Youth KAMS Amped is a project that aims to offer the youth of Kyogle regular, safe, fun and cheap events in the form of musical jams. These would provide connections between youth; offer a much needed rehearsal space; and target youth apathy in Kyogle. The project will be mentored and supervised by the newly formed Kyogle Acoustic Music Society (KAMS) with administrative support by from community service hub Kyogle Together. The acquisition of a PA and basic lighting rig would remove economic barriers for youth attendance of Youth KAMS Amped events.
There is a clear need for re-engagement of youth with the Kyogle community and this support will allow youth to develop a sense of connection and belonging within the wider community. There is also a huge need for a music space, as the pub scene is clearly not suitable for youth, with home practice offering logistic problems for both the musicians and their families; and noise problems for neighbours.
Running the project will give those involved experience in event management, budgeting, communication, and the wide variety of skills that come with the organisation and implementation of an event. Youth would be almost entirely in control of all aspects of the project, from the concept and design, which has already been developed by youth, to sound production and the co-ordination and management of the events. The adult input, such as supervision and help with some logistic requirements, would involve teaching and mentoring processes in collaboration with local youth.
