Video available in 720p HD

An homage to David Braben's 1993 computer game 'Frontier: Elite 2', with a nod to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

EDIT: 06/12/11
As it's coming up to a year of this being posted I'd like to share some "director's commentary" on the ending of this video:

8:28: After the viper is killed, the player is 'rebirthed', where the image switches between the three available start points of the game (Lave Station, Sirocco Station, and Olympus Village, Mars).

The next image is of Saturn, which a nod to the first officially released image of the game (this image was published in 'The One' magazine int the UK). A link to the original picture is on page 2 of the following link :
http://amr.abime.net/review_38271

The last 30 seconds is a reference to London (the place in game closest to where Frontier was created) and the Moon (the furthest that Man has ventured into space).

The last shot looks up at the vastness of space, symbolising both the vastness of our universe, but also the as-yet unsurpassed freedom of a game that was offered by Elite 2:Frontier.

  • Excellent tribute and video for a great retro game. Retro games from the early to late 90's are 1000% better than any PC games from the early to late 00's!

  • @Isinona

For vastness of space you could consider zooming out slowly on galactic map (not system map, nor local map).

    Anyway,

I'd kill for Frontier: Elite 4.

I'd genocide for it being on something like Orbiter engine.

  • Very nice tribute. Frontier is a great game and I can safely say it's not nostalgia as I first played it around 2005 or 2006. Probably the best and easily the most ambitious space trading game/spasim ever.

Newtonian flight and combat is great too, although it may be a bit hard to grasp at first.

@NJLanwarne Cemiess, I think. Don't remember coordinates, but it's an imperial system, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

  • Funny how to put about 100x 60 pixels image on 720 HD lol

  • Nice Viper!

  • Superb video! I am glad to have found this. :) Brings back memories. Well edited. Love the music!

  • Fantastic!

  • Anyone remember the run where you could get paid to take gems away as trash and sell them for a massive profit? Genius :)

  • Used to love the way you could randomly jump unitl your warp drive fell apart :D

  • Excellent video, I played original Elite, but have been thinking of firing up Frontier in an Amiga emulator, I think I'll have a crack at that.
