This is one of the most famous JS Bach's compositions, the G Prelude to the first Cello Suite, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Here I play it through an Akai EWI USB and Garritan Aria software, that is an Electronic Wind Instrument connected to a computer. The EWI isn't that much used in early or classical music yet, so this is a sort of rarity, I guess.
This piece wasn't written for wind instruments, so there's almost no place where to breath properly: I had to use a special technique known as "circular breathing", so that the music goes on while breathing in through the nose.
In the background, a sunny afternoon in Cannero - Lago Maggiore - Italy.

  • Circular breathin, right?

  • @Jazzadicto yep

  • well done that's beautiful, I have a question for you, I ve already decided to buy the ewi usb but was wondering how many years it lasts and also whether I will have to transpose the music I m reading when changing from say oboe sound to clarinet.. how does that work? I have 6 years music training with oboe so all the music i ve got is written for oboe.

  • @tux222 thanks! I don't know how many years an EWI might last, it's an electronic piece of equipment so I wouldn't bet on more than a few years: it really depends on how you manage it, how much you play it, etc. etc.

As for transposition, you can control it through the PC /Mac and you can transpose everything you want in any key. As default setting, you read and play concert ("C") and it does not depend on fingerings.

  • Very nice! are you using the aria garritan software for the Cello sound?

  • @gcbrign thanks! yes, the one that used to come with the usb ewi

  • Dude, great job! I can watch this every time when I start the YouTube.

  • @snowypetrel I believe the EWI 4000 can be used as a midi controller as well (which is all the EWI USB is). you could get some Garritan or other software and make it sound however you wanted. but....why spend 400 dollars more when the EWI USB seems to do the job just fine :)

  • @tux222 The EWI should in theory last for years and by that I mean a least couple of decades! The circuits and chips receive virtually no stress. Treat it like a real Oboe avoiding extremes of heat and cold. The keys are worked by a Piezoelectric electric resistor system and will outlive both us! I've had my EWI for over ten years it still has it's original reeds. I change the mouthpiece every couple of years for no other reason than hygiene.

  • Why does the ewi 4000s not have a variety of sounds, as the ewi usb does? I hear much more usable sounds on the usb version. The 4000s does not quite hit the spot because the 100 sounds are really not interesting to me. I know they can be altered but why is there not a selection of useful instrument sounds like sax, cello, trumpet, organ. Ewi 4000s is a boring synth.

  • Great job!

  • i learned 'cello whan i was 12,and i'm learning sax at 48, so this is definately the instrument for me! Nice work!
