Garrett McNamara breaks the world record for the largest wave ever surfed. The Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed the record saying it was officially 78 feet, setting the record for largest wave ever surfer by about 1 foot. McNamara, a 44-year-old Hawaii pro surfer caught the wave off the coast of Nazaré Portugal in November 2011.

well, you measure the height of the little man on the wave, then compare. probably with some esoteric process involving lasers, and satellites, and a guy in a helicopter with a really long tape measure and a pencil.
