@readysubjects Chief was not making fun of anyone, he was not racist, it was a time honored dance taught to the university by members of the Sioux tribe, and the suit chief wore was an authentically made suit by the Sioux, it was the opposite of disrespect.
I just watched this AGAIN after my sociology professor gave a talk today about how Native American mascots are racist. I spent my childhood in Illinois and Chief was a big part of Illinois culture. Thank you for posting this. It reminded me that Chief was spirit, loyalty, courage, honor, strength, and bravery. The tribes in Illinois supported him. Everything about him was AUTHENTIC. Stupid NCAA. Chief forever!
Quoting wikipedia definitions does not discount my earlier post. NCAA was wrong to impose/threaten sanctions against this tradition. In the end it was about money. Not honor or dignity. It is fine that you disagree with the Chief...I am proud to live in a country where we can openly debate our differences. Yesterday moved us away from democracy and toward dictatorship. Sad day.
"Ad hominem abusive (also called argumentum ad personam) usually and most notoriously involves insulting or belittling one's opponent, but can also involve pointing out factual but ostensibly damning character flaws or actions which are irrelevant to the opponent's argument. This tactic is logically fallacious because insults and even true negative facts about the opponent's personal character have nothing to do with the logical merits of the opponent's arguments or assertions." (wikipedia)
The sight of a sea of orange conformity standing in steadfast solidarity with a time honored tradition of courage, honor, and dignity. I wonder if I filed a complaint with the NCAA and or the U of I stating that I was personally offended by the removal of the Chief...I wonder if they would take up my cause. This has not moved us closer to a culture of dignity...it is polical correctness gone wrong. How anyone can watch that and feel as thought they were being disrespectful is beyond me.
