On a call from Dr. Rajwant Singh (Chairman, Sikh Council on Religion and Education (www.sikhcouncilusa.org) Convener, EcoSikh (www.ecosikh.org), Dagshai Public School, Dagshai Cantt. celebrated March 14, 2011 -- Guru Gaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji as Sikh Environment Day. Each student of the school planted a sapling in the school campus, as a tribute to Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib, who is remembered in Sikh history, for his deep sensitivity to nature and its preservation.

Dr. S.S. Chandel (Deputy Director Horticulture, Distt. Solan) was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Dr. Devender Attri (Horticulture Development Officer, Dharampur, HP) and Dr. Rajesh Kapoor of Solan were the guests of honour. They all planted a sapling each. The occasion was covered by a team of the Doordarshan Jalandhar.

The students and the staff gathered in the school Gurudawara Hall and recited shabad kirtan. A poem written by Shiv Kumar Batalvi, titled Rukh (A Tree), was recited by a student and was sung in chorus in a melodious tune. S. Jagjit Singh (Ex-Principal, Gurmat College, Patiala), Director Divinity Dagshai Public School told the gathering about the life and teachings of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib.

The guests highlighted the importance of the day and cautioned the gathering against the tragic results if we lose the natural balance and disturb the ecology and the natural environment.

The slogan of the day was Pawan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dhart Mahat which is enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib on Page 8. The Guru's teaching describe Air as the Guru, Water as the Father, and Earth as the Great Mother of all and has told us to respect and take care of these three elements to save the mother earth for the generations to come. Banners (Sent herewith as attachments) were exhibited in the school campus. Mr. Amarjit Singh the Executive Director of the School proposed a vote of thanks and reiterated his resolve to celebrate this event every year with all the enthusiasm and zeal.

  • I taught at the Sikh school in Dagshai in 1964/65 when the military cantonment was busy on the opposite side of the mountain just before the 1964 war with Pak. Sri Joginder Singh was the Headmaster and I taught English and math. I don't know but I do wonder what happened to the old school site and facilities.
