Allan John Clarke (born 31 July 1946 in Short Heath, Willenhall, Staffordshire) was one of English football's greatest goalscorers who shot to fame in the much-admired and feared Leeds United team of the 1970s.
Clarke peaked at Elland Road and he scored 26 goals in his first season (and earned the predatory nickname "Sniffer", which stuck throughout his career) as Leeds United chased a dream "treble" of League championship, FA Cup and European Cup though ultimately they won nothing. Clarke hit the post in the FA Cup Final at Wembley (with strike partner Mick Jones following up to score the rebound) and then went on a mazy run through several Chelsea defenders in the replay to set up a goal for Jones again, but Leeds United still lost. The title had already gone to Everton on the last day of the season, and the European Cup campaign ended with defeat to Celtic in the semi-final.

  • I've looked at a lot of Leeds videos..and some of the football is breathtaking..individual skill neat passing and superb finishing..like Clarke..but all I hear about this Leeds team is " Dirty Leeds "....are they blind or just jealous because Leeds had a brilliant team?

Quite sad really...they'll never get the respect they deserved..every one was an international..surely that means something?

    MOT.

  • He was surprising fast on the ball for a guy had quite a gangly build. Shows quite a burst of pace at 0:58.

  • Opposing fans used to call him The Twig.

Was that because of his build or because he knew how to " Stick ", the ball in the net?

  • a world class striker. what a legend, and what an understanding with the much under-rated Mick Jones.

  • allan clarke 1-0

  • good video, sometimes not mentioned enough

  • Yes Clarke..good player very thin and looked weak, but made up for it with guile and ablility, underated player. cannot recall him being hacked down by Harris et al, so in hindsight was quite durable.
