OWL DEER SWOOP ATTACK WATCH DEER KICK UP PREY

This video shows a predator, who hunts by night - a great horned owl. It is watching a herd of deer crossing a field. It was probably waiting for them to kick up a rodent. At the end the owl appeared to swoop for prey. (Sorry the video is dark. It began at dusk and continued into darkenss-this is when owls hunt. It was filmed in night vision and infra-red. I tried to lighten it, but it is still dark.)

At the beginning the deer are on the north side of the field and the owl swooped across the field. Then it landed in a tree in the center of the field.

The deer crossed the field running under the tree where the owl was perched. Then as I approached the owl, it flew to the north part of the field and perched. It allowed me to get right under it for a while.

Then it flew back to the tree in the center of the field. At the end, it swooped toward the ground and may have been after a rodent.

**The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a large native of the Americas. It can be up to 27 inches long, have a wingspan of over 60 inches, and weigh over 3 pounds. Owls have amazing binocular vision under low light conditions. Their hearing is acute and they have good depth perception. They can pin point the horizontal and vertical direction of a sound. They hunt by night and sometimes emit a horrible-sounding noise when they make a kill.
