He is trying to unite the nation, not divide it, he spoke of both white and black points of view. If you only try to understand one side and not the other you will only create war. Also he had to address race at that time anyway because of the reverend's comments being all over the news. Yes the economy is extremely important but a great president addresses many issues like education and health care etc and Obama has spoken about the economy far more than race anyway throughout his campaign.
