Red Army Chorus - Ukrainian Poem

Esse é um poema de Taras G. Shevchenko, o mais famoso poeta ucraniano. Ele nasceu escravo e comprou sua liberdade. O poema fala sobre os "rugidos e gemidos do rio Dnipro" - o maior da Ucrania que praticamente divide o país em leste e oeste. As emoções do rio são uma metafora ao povo escravisado da Ucrania clamando por liberdade.

the poem is by Taras G. Shevchenko, Ukraine's most famous poet. He was born into serfdom and bought his freedom. The poem talks about the "Roaring and groaning of the Dnipro river" - largest in Ukraine and practically divides the country into west and east. The river's emotions are a metaphor for that of the enslaved people of Ukraine yearning to be free. Perhaps someone more learned could shed more light.

The beginning is in russian, but the end suggested all along the song is in ukrainian:

bandurist2007 is right, the song does quote Taras Shevchenko's poem, but the song as a whole is about liberating Ukraine from the Germans ("За ними гонится гестапо"!). Perhaps it's fair to say that the song doesn't endorse Shevchenko... It morphs the Soviet Army into Shevchenko ;)

This song has successfully taken me through my darkest days. It is one of the few songs I can listen to over and over again and not get tired of it. So powerful, so emotional, so passionate. I feel my soul lift and fall with it whenever I hear it.
