Pea Island Life Saving station was located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and populated by an all-black crew with the first African American in the commanding officer position. Fred White is a descendent of one family that have a tradition of serving in the lifesaving service and was assigned to Pea Island dating back to 1897 when great, great grandfather Joseph H. Berry joined.
