by anonymous through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org This very insightful piece explains the similarites and differences between the Quantum physical view of the Universe and that of Buddhism. Once again, that great scientist and experientialist the Buddha, has had insights quite some millenia ahead of his time!

  • I have a question. How is there no self? I read this in many buddhist books but I can't grasp this concept.

  • @drewnut This no self biz doesn't mean one doesn't exist but that what is known as "self" exists bound up with all the universe and has not existence apart from other things. Since it cannot exist independently, in this sense, there is no self. That is the idea at its simplest.

  • @opensourcebuddhism Thanks. I find it amazing that after over 20 years of schooling I can't figure this stuff out but a guy 2600 years ago sat under a tree and it all just came to him. Some sutras claim the buddha had psychic powers, could levitate, travel to other galaxys, and shoot fire out of his hands. Do you think enlightenment grants these kinds of powers or is this the influence of Hinduism mythology on Buddhism?

  • @drewnut The answer to your question is: both. The "magic" of Buddha is a Hindu influence...shows he can "compete" with the Hindu "big guys" but he said of miracles, "tricks are for kids" you might say. "Anyone claiming miracles is not a disciple of mine" he said. Still, legend claims he could levitate, flew that way to Sri Lanka...believe it...or not.

  • your videos are great

  • @JoeyTHEArms thank you!

  • the science says: theres no empty space. an empty space is not empty at all.

buddhism says that for about 2500 years.

    buddhism is not religion.

buddhism is a science of the mind.

  • @C0C0nutFace Well...you would be wrong about that. The Buddha was the world's first psychologist, later Buddhists coming up with the idea of the subconsciousness 2300 years before Freud; meditation has PROVEN health benefits. Finally, none other than the Buddha discovered the theory of inter-relativity of things. Such a "cause-and-effect" approach is the core of Buddhism. I could go on...and lay waste to your notions viz. Confucianism and Daoism...monotheism is not the only religion you know.
