With access to Wikipedia, I have access to the cultural context of Joseph Schmidt (1904-42).
I did not know that Joseph was a heroic victim of Fascism in 1942.
My take on Joseph Schmidt and this lyric in particular in 2011, is the imperative to fight militarism which debases humanity by restricting true possibilities for change.
