To Letterman's credit, he really seemed to like R.E.M. (and X, for that matter, though it's too bad the exposure didn't help them all that much).

That was just weird! Never seen someone talk to the band and the lead singer is out of site.

Drove Stipe to a REM gig in 85. His car (a gold Dodge Colt) broke down, so my girlfriend and I, who were going to the show, drove him and friend to show (at Royal Oak Music Theater) in the back of a 1985 Camaro. Very shy, asked if we knew of a good veg restaurant. Funny part: he put us on the list to get tix, which we already had. Those tix were actually 2 rows behind the seats I sold!! Still have the stub, lost the autograph. Prolly on the tix I sold!!

I don't know why he doesn't talk to the drummer, but Micheal Stipe had overwhelming social anxiety back then. Some people with anxiety issues can perform music, comedy, even act, but have trouble interacting in normal social situations. Even though you can hardly consider an interview on national television normal.
