  • I'm a political scientist, I feel that I should be doing history to take off where he left. that's how much i love his work.

  • What a lesson of optimism and courage under the most difficult circumstances! Very glad to have seen this--hitherto I've only read books and articles by Prof. Judt, this video would probably not be his choice for a first "Live" impression, but the vigour and clarity of his writing is very much present in character: "le style, ç'est l'homme!".

  • Beautiful film... not a blockbuster, though... I ask myself, why not? Is philosophy really such a frightening shadow of ourselves? Have we really become so afraid of changing our view, that we simply give in to the intellectual equivalent of a drive-thru at a fast food joint? And if so, have we always been this way?... I am glad to know of Tony Judt and his work. My condolences go out to his family, his friends, and all the others who miss him.

  • Tony, we miss you! Deep condolences to his family for losing this most human and inspiring of professors.

P.S. Back in 1982 I walked into a small course "Introduction to Marxism" by a visiting professor from England. There were only 8 or 9 of us. It changed my life. I was lucky he accepted to be my tutor for a semester of directed readings. He inspired me to do what I have done since: work to help improve society and help those less fortunate than me.

  • @Candidulus Thanks for the suggestion, the Charlie Rose interview is much more substantive than this piece. But I think you get a better sense of the man, as he lived most of his life, by watching the Rose interviews directly preceding his physical decline. A great mind.

  • @theprankster100 If all Jewish intellectuals had the character of Tony Judt, Noam Chomsky and Norm Finkelstein, antisemitism would disappear forever from the global politic.

  • Everyone should see his last interview with Charlie Rose. It's the only time I've ever seen Charlie tear up. A wonderful man and a brilliant writer, Tony Judt, you are dearly missed
