I visited the highest point on the transcontinental railroad at Sherman Hill, just west of Cheyenne, Wyoming. This historic Union Pacific right of way summits at an elevation of 8013 feet.

  • Why do people who video trains in the sun, shoot on the shadow side? Cracking film, but let down by the poor position of the person who is videoing.

    Shame!

  • @SCOOTERBOY40029: Although ideal lighting is a goal for photos and videos, sometimes it's not possible. Even if I had time to hop fences and run around to the other side of the tunnel (which I didn't), the camera angle would have been too steep and I would have been too close to the smoke streaming out of the tunnel. Why didn't anyone provide me with cloud cover for neutral lighting? Shame! :-)

  • Fantastic! What was in the white wagons at the front of the train? It just proves that in Great Britain we really don't know much about serious rail-roading.

Mind you; we are a tiny island and it is possible to drive the entire length in on day (and we are bursting with a population of well over 60 million people...)

  • @4beatlefans: Those wagons are called covered hoppers. They can contain grain, soda ash, potash, plastic pellets, etc.

  • Which type of locomotive is great to tackle thehill?

  • @chefjavier: UP employee or manager can best answer that. C44AC's (AC4400's) seem to be the most seen locomotive on Sherman Hill when I visited.

  • I had the opportunity to railfan this very line in the summer of 2005, plus several spots along the Harriman Cutoff (at Harriman, Perkins and 1/2 mile south of Dale JCT), and at Dale, Tie Siding, Sherman, Buford & Borie. Awesome place to chase & shoot trains! The video brings back memories of several railran trips I made over Sherman Hill.

  • "....in Great Britain we really don't know much about serious rail-roading. " is this a joke ? Where do you think it all began ?

  • @cchan006 Thanks - it is really a great vid, I hope to get to the states to see some action like this soon. Regards from Great Britain.

  • @cchan006 What is the most you see? In your opinion? EMD?
