i wanted a good all-rounder sound module that is also portable. the roland xv-2020 is a little too expensive for me right now and the kurzweil me-1 is hard to find any may also lack some types of voices.

i've settled on the older jv-1010, which has all the patches of the jv-1080/2080 plus all from something called the Sessions Card. Over 1000 patches in all.

i've read that the audio quality of the 1010 may not quite match that of the 1080/2080. i've not found any facts or specs to back this up. what i think some people may mean by this comparison is that the 1080/2080 have more outputs, which potentially would mean you can get a more optimised output quality than you could using just the 1010's L&R outputs. if anyone has audio comparison samples or experience with both the 1010 and 1080/2080 then do chime in.

so it just arrived and i hooked it up to my 2-octave keyboard controller (m-audio oxygen 8) which has knobs, allowing for easy filter control. not that interested in editing the patches right now, but i do have the pc software to do that for later (can send it to anyone who also needs it).

the audio file here is my first playing about with the presets, with some filter sweeps. a bit limited with just the 2 octaves, but this little demo is just about getting an idea of what some presets sound like. i'll make a more interesting one at some point.

  • Great to hear a thoughtful synth demo on yt for a change, and a nice listen overall.

Did you use any external processing and/or EQ ? How did you record it ?

  • @propoetide thanks for the comments, everyone.

No external processing used...just the onboard reverb. I just played it live for about an hour into my audio-recorder (any WAV-recorder will do) and chopped out the boring bits so it sounded halfway cohesive.

I used the filter quite a bit, which sounds great considering it's just a digital LPF on a relatively cheap sound module.

Check out my similar demo of the Roland World Expansion:

  • @dhollseed crazy fast replying, thanks :)

Listening to the world expansion one while typing this.

Oh and I just bid on one after hearing this, guess I'm obliged to post a video reply soon.

  • @propoetide great! did you get it? prices vary a lot, but should be less than €150. i have two of them so can sell you one of mine if you missed the auction :))

  • This is the greatest little synth!!!

  • @dhollseed so you can tweak filter etc with a midid controller? what did you use?

  • ฟังดูก็ใช้ได้

  • $ for $, this module is unbeatable. I have it & also a XV-5080 & I think nearly every expansion board (10+). I haven't used my JV in years & unfortunately, now I can't seem to figure out how to set the MIDI so I can control it w/my Korg Triton or Yamaha Motif. It's definitely connected/MIDI because it's in the middle of a MIDI chain & I can access the modules after it, but just the the JV. I am looking for a use manual online.

  • I own a JV1010, can you list the set of patches you were using? I would like to see if I can coax the same sound out of mine. Cheers!

  • Excellent soundscape!

  • This is great music! This is much more than a demo.

  • can you do this live? With, just plug in a midi keyboard ?

  • @dhollseed watch?v=D7JLtehNNmk - as promised some mucking about with the presets (different yt account).

  • cool man! i've the opportunity to get one and was wondering how it sounds.

your video is exactly what i needed. i'm gonna have it... cheers
