The gospel is liberty to the captives (Is 61:1), not the conditional possibility of liberty to all of humanity. The NeoCalvinists who teach the great truth of particular redemption devolve into sheer mysticism when asked to reconcile this truth with the well-meant offer of salvation to all of humanity. If Christ did not die for all, how are you offereing salvation to all? The gospel proclaims a finished work and gives assurance to those who believe that they have everlasting life (John 3:16).
I think you read too much in to my comment. I aggree with you, I was trying to say there is more to enteranl life than freedom from hell. I think you could use your efforts to help others and non-believers to understand enteral life and kingdom living.
@durbinjeff Seems you have set up a false antithesis here - Jesus is pretty clear that the gospel transforms people's lives here and now because it brings us to the beginning of eternal life - John 11:25-26 is the "real gospel message" AS WELL AS Luke 4:18-21!
The book will handily present its argument in a methodical layout, in such a way that the already-faithful reader can comprehend and use to organize his or her thoughts. In this capacity, the book succeeds but in no other.
This book isn't very good from where I sit. As a non-Christian, I read this as a part of a class on Christian Studies at a university I attend. I was disappointed to find that it defends its premise quite feebly, using straw man arguments and red herrings to avoid answering basic, theological questions. For anyone but a Southern Baptist or other form of modern, American Christian/Protestant, it will be a poor source of information.
For Christians, however, it organizes its thoughts quite well.
The real Gospel message is found in Luke 4: 18-21 and that is Jesus’s announcement of the freedom and grace we have as believers, the Gospel wasn’t intended to be a safe zone to avoid Hell but to live an abundant and Christ filled live while we are on Earth.
lord, do we need another book? it kinda reminds me of a PBS broadcast : a book review about "things that annoy us as people",, the only thing more annoying than a book about things that annoy us is a book review about a book about things that annoy us. if you want to get technical the gospel is defined as "how that, jesus died , was buried and rose again according to the scriptures. all else is human conjecture. and even the translation is human. some are more human than others i guess.
This is an excellent little book. Thank you for writing it, thank you 9Marks for promoting it and thank you Crossway for publishing it. Every pastor and church leader should read it and have copies available to give away.
