    I would say tortured longing more than simple misery. There is sorrow, yes, but also hope. The image that it brings to my mind is of somebody desperately reaching out for happiness, only to have it slip from their grasp.

    I read somewhere that when Rachmaninov wrote this in 1912, he was filled with sorrow following the sinking of the Titanic.. It is believed that this tragedy inspired this hauntingly beautiful work. Nicely done!
