An Irish outing for my 1904 tenor banjo, with lead guitar, rhythm guitar and bass backing it up. This tune is sometimes called The Red Headed Boy, or The Red Haired Boy, or the Old Rigadoo. It's in A mixolydian mode.

I love the sound of string bands, and have tried to create that sound here.

Chords:

A / / / A / D / A / / / G / / /
A / / / A / D / A / / / A E A /
A / / / A / D / A / / / G / / /
A / / / A / D / A / / / A E A /
G / / / G / D / A / / / G / / /
A / / / A / D / A / / / A E A /
G / / / G / D / A / / / G / / /
A / / / A / D / A / / / A E A /

  • Try playing triplets (hammering? not sure what the technical term is) instead of dead single notes with a pause. To fill the gap like. It will sound better. Nice tho

  • @BanjoMan1916 I often do triplets - I was actually playing this one fingerstyle so didn't really think in triplets this time! :-)

  • now this was very cool,,,i loved it~~~~,,goin to look for some more of your talent,,,,signed,an ole fiddle player,,lol

  • Glad you liked it - you'll find one or two traditional things on my channel... :-)

  • Nice going Will! Have you ever done a split screen with you playing all the parts in view simultaneously?

  • No - the old version of iMovie I've been using isn't up to split screen. I've acquired a copy of Final Cut Express - which might do it - but I haven't had time to play with it yet! Cheers, Will :-)

  • im doing this song for a skool play. fun to sing and play drums with

  • @stevecoyne1 Hi Steve - thanks for the kind words. My banjo, like my tenor guitar, is tuned C-G-D-A (4-3-2-1) - like a viola. It's short scale, so not really suitable for the likes of "Irish" and other tunings. :-)

  • Beautiful! Thanks, b'ye!!

  • An excellent rendition ^^ Thank you.

  • It has great tone . My first banjo was a John Grey I got on Portabelo Rd while working a pottery in Ewenny Wales .The year was 1970 !! All the best, Guy

  • Thanks. Someday I'd like to be savvy enough to work it out for student use.

    Peace, Mooh (Mike).
