Here is a little different look at the start. Don't worry, it is only for a short time. The darn wind in the mic drives me nuts. So I wanted to try and use my S5 to record sound from further inside the car, then use the sound with the image I recorded with the T1i. Well it jives just fine at first. Yet after about 3-4 minutes there is a problem with synchronicity and the jive is gone. I couldn't use the entire sound track in place of the native one so here is a look from one camera at the start showing the shooting position and perhaps the easiest place to get a fairly steady shot when you don't have anything to mount your camera on. If you want to get a shot looking forward, my experience it you get MASSIVE wind noise and you have to free hand the camera to shoot over the mirror. I never set the camera down before when using my S5. It was light completely automatic and easy to hold at arms length for long periods. I have paced for over 10 minutes quite a few times. The SLR is a little heavy and requires certain buttons to be pushed to re focus or other buttons to push and wheels to turn in order to change ap. This is ok sometimes with one hand. But not all the time especially if you are aimed at something in a live video AND doing the driving. So set on the window ledge seemed to keep it from wandering all over the place when I made adjustments.

Back to shooting forward experience. Now it is possible to find a quiet spot when looking forward but it is elusive if you have any cross winds. Believe me, my main focus is on the road and most times I only estimate where the camera is looking. Glad it has a pretty wide view (18mm). Also if you ever try a pace. Look at how it looks when you are just a little in front of the train. Notice how much more of the train you can get into the shot and again the back of the camera is to the wind if you get any buffeting. I have an inch of sponges and tape over the mic and I still get wind noise at 50mph. Also take a still from time to time on the fly like this if you can. Depending on Ap and Spd you can get a cool effect if you are steady on the train or target. It is easy to sit next to the train if there is no conflicting traffic around here. Try moving around. When I can with the wind taken into account also, I try to back off and get that forward looking shot. I really like to look of the shoulder of the train as it charges forward. But the darn wind and I have to drive. Then at times I pick a spot right next to it for the sounds and even a look in the cab if I can. But a comfortable spot a few car lengths ahead is best and with the Engine and trail of cars behind all in frame while passing through the surround landscape is my favorite. I hope you like it also.

This was shot with a Canon T1i using the 1080 setting (Video Processed to the 720 setting for this post) and with the 18-55mm kit lens using auto focus (done manually at certain reframing portions) and Image Stabilization. Sometimes the jitter from the window sill can cause the stabilization to not be so able to keep things smooth. Happy Shooting.

This will be posted without the video overlay at the start and no singing at DTrainzz. D ave

  • Nice video, but I'm afraid your camera will fall out of the window! Try using my pacing method and put the un-extended tripod in the passenger seat with the camera pointing out the window- then, you'll be able to drive and the wind won't get in your mic

  • Nice pursuit. Very good shot. Bravo. Philippe
