Lets see, the Ambassador was a budget attempt to modernise an aeging princess platform, like the Ital was to the Marina, the Acclaim was a Honda car, the Rover SD1 fell to pieces within 3 years from rust, Metros the same. The Mini was the only car that was of real merit in its class even by 1982.

BL made some real beautiful cars with character ;-)

Oh I remeber at this time here in Ireland we pretty much switched en-mass from British cars to French or Jap. A Renault 18 seemed like a wonderfull machine compared to a Marina/Allegro/Escort/Avenger. Leyland mean't trouble, Ford mean't terrible fuel consumption. I can see why people thought a Renault or Peugeot were great.

Patrick Mower also did one or two episodes of The Sweeney....amongst many other roles.

SD1 2600- good car until the camshaft seized up

@kazimann The only decent cars are the Mini, the SD1, and the Honda. Cars in these years were pathetic, especially here in U.S. Every national automaker had a "captive import" like the Triumph Acclaim. Jimmy Carter got is right when he called it the "Malaise Era."

The Unions completely screwed car manufacturing in this country. Thatcher wanted the unions smashed, so she didn't give a hoot about foreign marques taking over - it meant less power to the Unions. If they had taken a more modern view of the world, instead of the 3 day working week, unballoted strikes and sympathetic strikes, British car manufacturing may have had a chance. Good cars came too late ...

I worked in a British Leyland dealership at this time, just before it closed in the October of 82, to be honest the build quality was starting to improve at this time, the Triumph Acclaim proved very reliable with it's Honda engine, the Metro sold very well, with the MG Metro coming out, and there was a Vanden Plas Metro which was very well finished, and the Rover SD1 were much better made by this time, although the Ital was overdue replacement, it did offer simple no frills motoring.
