Actually, it's not a VFD (variable frequency drive). It's got a BPM motor (brushless permanent magnet) in the compressor. Still needs a controller to run the motor, since there is no brushes, it's electronically commutated.

Same here. And yes, someone needs to make one AFFORDABLE! The Carrier Greenspeed Inverter heat pump is $7,500.00 out of the box, no installation, and before tax is applied.

I know, I wish other OEM's would get on the bandwagon, and start making some affordable condensing units using this compressor. A lot of manufacturer's already make air handlers and furnaces with ECM motor's.

Right, but as of right now, Carrier is the only one making a true variable speed unit, with a VFD and all, using this compressor. To use this variable speed compressor, manufacturers first have to create a VFD that will work with it.

Actually they are talking about the compressor technology that is in the Carrier Greenspeed series. But any manufacturer can use these compressors, more will buy these in the near future; it's not Carrier specific. Copeland just makes compressors, motors, etc, they don't make complete residential condensing units, that's up to the OEM's.
