From what I understand Dazhongwang at the Wencai temple in Chiayi selects a new caretaker every year. The men throw these 2 wooden clappers on the floor, and the god indicates his approval for just one of them through the clappers, which have a 'head' and a 'tail' side. They must fall one heads and one tails to indicate a yes. I recall the throwing was done more than once for confirmation.
According to posters at Lungshan temple in Taipei the clappers must fall one heads and one tails three consecutive times to indicate that the answer is appropriate.
