At the end of Durga Puja, the idols of Goddess Durga and her children (Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Karthik), are submerged in the sacred Ganges. The distributary of the Ganges flowing by Calcutta is the Hooghly, and so all idols from the city are immersed in the Hooghly. This video, and parts II, III, show the idol immersion of S R Das Rd Tarun Sangha Puja. Because of the long lines at the ghats (places on the river bank where you can go down to the river), the wait time can be long.In this particular instance, it was well past midnight, at Babughat in Calcutta.

The people carrying the idols are usually day laborers who are paid to do the heavy lifting.
