FLOODS IN KRISHNA & GUNTUR DISTRICTS,VIJAYAWADA ,ANDHRA PRADESH ---
8,000 sq-km submerged in a day.
AFFECTED BY THE FLOODS & THE RAINS
Vijaywada, Oct. 6 -- The furious river waters sheared for days through farmland and homes, inundating 20 lakh acres every day - Delhi five times over, or 13 cities the size of Mumbai.
The Krishna rushed in from the Almatti dam in Karnataka and submerged 8,000 sq-km of land in a day. It stands at the gates of the British colonial-era Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada & a breach here submerged vast swathes in the state's rice-rich Krishna and Guntur districts.
The Prakasam barrage is a key passageway for the Krishna, which meanders through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on way to the Bay of Bengal.
But as floodwaters poured in, gates were opened at Srisalam, worsening the situation. These Torrential rains caused heavy flooding in Krishna & Guntur Districts & destroyed thousands of homes, killed hundreds of people, damaged roads & damaged inundated rice crops & fields & forced thousnads of people to flee to higher places leaving their everything With inflows into major dams lessening.
There is a drastic fall of flood outflows even as large areas in Krishna and Guntur districts came under water from the Krishna river. The Prakasam barrage at Vijayawada received a record-breaking 11 lakh cusec water on Monday night and kept all its 70 gates open to discharge the water. The previous high was 10.6 lakh cusecs recorded in 1903.
The Low-lying areas in Vijayawada and more than 130 villages came under water in both Guntur and Krishna districts, and up to more than 3 lakh people were moved to safer areas.
Floods have economically ruined over lakhs of families in the state. While many lost their life-long savings, others are not in a position to repair their houses.
Cash, clothes, utensils and other household articles were washed away in the floods. Self-employed petty businessmen are the worst hit as their shops were completely inundated . Farmers, who invested up for farming, lost their standing crops.
We have become orphans. -they stated ...
More than 100`s of villages were submerged due to flood in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna & Guntur districts. flood victims have taken shelter relief camps in the district. Some villagers have taken shelter atop hillocks as their villages have been inundated. cyclone that killed 10,000 people in 1977,but this devastation commented as witnessing natures fury after a gap of thirty years.
Though not too many human lives have been lost in the current flood, thousands have been rendered homeless. . With the inundation of houses, paddy fields and other crops, people here have lost all hopes. It would take many years for them to recover from the losses.
Churches in the low line areas were washed away, because they were built with mud & covered with thatched leaves. Because these Churches belong to neglected Untouchables who are living in low areas. Everyone does the relief works - but in a temporary way.but,we are praying & looking farward to take up relief work in a permanent way-which can be useful & stands for long & permanent basis.-its a worth & it will be a Blessing to many.
Please think about it & pray & show your Christian Love. pricilla chinni [pricichinnib@yahoo.com]
