Mikhail dances with the Hell's Kitchen Dance Company in a piece called 'Come In' directed by Aszure Barton, a choreographer in residence at the Baryshnikov Art Center. Watch a behind the scenes rehearsal of Baryshnikov with the young troupe under the direction of Barton.

-----

Decades after he first took the world by storm, Mikhail Baryshnikov is still dancing, and now in his 60's, he is still recognized as the quintessence of his art form. In 2005, he opened the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City, which provides space and support for creating art. He talked about his illustrious ballet career and nurturing young dancers and choreographers with PBS NewsHour correspondent Jeff Brown. - Macniel / Lehrer Productions

Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov (born January 27, 1948) is a Soviet-born Russian American dancer, choreographer, and actor, often cited alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. After a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he defected to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in western dance. After freelancing with many companies, he joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer to learn George Balanchine's style of movement. He then moved to New York to dance with the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director.

  • Who are you cynical people?! It's a rehearsal in a language foreign to you all I guess. Does everything have to be pure and perfect? How high do we all need to go with art, to fall hopelessly low in our thoughts about expressing self? I am not a dancer, critic or any kind of artist. Just a lover of beauty in all shape and form. Please correct all my errors in this post, sure you can focus on errors rather than content. Thanks for giving me the time. I love Baryshinikov. U must be all perfect.

  • The beautiful touching music is from VLADIMIR MARTYNOV - COME IN!

  • LOVE BARYSHNIKNOV

  • I love Baryshnikov.

  • LOVE IT!

  • don't analyze, just intuit the dance and you will discover the beauty as the language and vocabularies they use becomes apparent. Misha, thanks for this performing arts piece. It's poignantly beautiful in its bare simplicity.

  • This is a dreadful reflection of the degeneration of dance and fine arts...Did Brittany Spears choreograph this?

  • I feel I'm rather ignorant about "dance." But in regard to the meaningfulness of the motions, I assume many things would seems meaningless if one had no sense of reference or knowledge of the rules therein the thing. And the music itself of course is essential, in that I assume that's how the dancers keep in time.

  • Do you know who's the composer of the music? Tkx
